It's like putting an expensive item into your pocket while shopping. While you have not technically committed a crime, it looks very much like you are about to, so you'll probably risk arrest just the same. In the same way as you can't just open someone's front door without permission just to 'look inside' their house. You can't just open a machine that doesn't belong to you and poke around inside to see what's going on. It's just going to get you arrested, banned from the venue, or beaten up.
